The “V.C. Schilling Kar 88” is an antique German Karabiner 1888 cavalry carbine manufactured by the private firm V.C. Schilling in Suhl, Germany. It was the German Empire’s first smokeless powder carbine. It was developed as a shorter, handier version of the Gewehr 1888 “commission rifle” for issue to cavalry and specialist troops like artillery and balloon crews. V.C. Schilling (along with C.G. Haenel) was one of the initial private firms contracted to produce the carbine in Suhl. It featured a straight-pull Mannlicher-style clip loading system, a metal barrel jacket, a bent “spoon” bolt handle, and a blunt nose cap with an integrated front sight. It did not have a provision for a bayonet. V.C. Schilling Kar 88 carbines are considered scarce and highly collectible antiques, often found in various conditions.
