Item description:

Dated to antiquity, this Davy-style miner’s safety lamp features a cylindrical, dual-layered wire gauze mesh enclosed by a sturdy brass frame. The top of this lantern is crowned with a heavy, embossed metal shield stamped by the manufacturer, W.S. Hughes of Scranton, Pennsylvania, and is complete with a curved hanging hook for hands-free underground utility. Resting on a wide, tiered brass fuel font base, this lamp exhibits a rich, naturally aged dark patina and weathered texture, showcasing the rugged engineering designed to safely illuminate hazardous, gas-filled coal mines during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In good to fair condition, with significant wear and patina throughout. See photos for details.
