Description
A charming pair of primitive American antique bentwood nesting cheese boxes, showcasing classic early 20th-century craftsmanship. Each round box features a flexible steam-bent wood band wrapped to form a tight cylinder, secured along the overlapping seams with copper tacks and structural wire staples.
The thicker top box features historical black grease pencil shipping or weight notations across the outer band reading "22 1/4" and "26-A", along with faded handwritten merchant text across the outer lid planks. Both boxes feature their original multi-panel inset wood plank lids and bases. Designed to protect large wheels of cheese during rail transport, this authentic pair serves as excellent country farmhouse primitive storage or decorative risers.
Lot Contents & Dimensions
Deep Cheese Box (1): Measures approximately 15 inches in diameter by 5.25 inches tall. Features historical grease pencil numbers on the side wall.
Shallow Cheese Box (1): Measures approximately 15.25 inches in diameter by 3.5 inches tall. Features a slightly cleaner blonde wood patina.
Condition Report
Structure: Both boxes remain structurally strong, holding their correct circular shapes without major compression or warping. The steam-bent side laps are firmly secured with original fasteners.
Wood Condition: The unfinished wood has a beautiful warm honey-blonde coloration. The interior floors are exceptionally clean and free of heavy staining.
Historical Wear: Consistent with authentic agricultural usage, there are minor splits, small grain separations, and natural edge rough spots along the thin bentwood rims. The lid of the deeper box shows some light surface markings and age lines.
