Item description:

Description: A primitive pair of late 19th or early 20th-century Midwestern utilitarian stoneware kitchen fruit jars or preservation crocks. The lot features one crock completely covered in a dark brown Albany-type slip glaze inside and out, displaying distinct horizontal wheel-thrown ridges. Accompanying it is a traditional two-tone salt-glazed crock finished with a rich brown glazed upper collar over an off-white cream slip lower body. Both vessels are built with thick, unglazed inner collar shelves originally designed to support stone lids or string-tied wax paper seals.

Dimensions: The completely brown crock stands approximately 8.5 inches high by 6.5 inches in diameter. The two-tone crock stands 9.25 inches high by 6.75 inches in diameter.

Markings: The flat, unglazed bases are plain and unmarked. The distinct profiles, clay composition, and localized glaze techniques closely align with historic production by regional foundries like the Robinson Ransbottom Pottery Company of Roseville, Ohio.

Condition: Authentic antique condition with visible age-appropriate primitive flaws. The full-brown crock is structurally sound with no large cracks, showing a few superficial kiln pops, a minor blemish on the upper lip, and an original dark glaze pooling skip near the lower front base footprint. The two-tone crock features an advanced vertical hairline structural crack originating at the upper rim and running down the front face, along with scattered shallow flakes, minor chips along the inner lip shelf, and a rough texture on the unglazed rim.
