Item Description
This exceptional militaria lot features a side-by-side comparison of two antique cast iron solid shot projectiles, perfectly illustrating the visual difference between battlefield-recovered and unburied ordnance.
Dug Cast Iron Cannonball (Left): This solid iron grapeshot ball was recovered from an unknown historic site in Ohio. It features a heavily oxidized, deeply pitted rich brown patina consistent with long-term burial in Ohio soil. The piece remains solid and structurally stable. Measures approximately 2 inches in diameter.
Unfired Cast Iron Cannonball (Right): An unburied, stable piece that retains its original metallic gray appearance. Because it escaped ground burial, its distinct manufacturing mold seam remains cleanly intact across the hemisphere. The surface shows minor scuffs and light oxidation spots but is smooth compared to the dug example. Measures approximately 2 inches in diameter.
