An exceptional estate collection of nine (9) original, vintage first-generation Hot Wheels “Redline” die-cast toy cars manufactured by Mattel, dating from the late 1960s to the early 1970s. This highly sought-after lot showcases iconic early custom and futuristic fantasy castings finished in Mattel’s signature vibrant, translucent metallic Spectraflame paint over base metal structures, anchored on classic red-pinstripe wheels.
Lot Includes:
Silhouette (1968 Sweet 16 Casting): Three classic bubble-top custom hot rods designed by Howard Rees. Features one in magenta/purple Spectraflame, one in lime green Spectraflame, and one in red Spectraflame. All three showcase highly detailed exposed chrome front engine blocks and matching painted metal undercarriages retaining clear 1967 Mattel Inc. USA copyright base stamps.
Swingin’ Wing (1969 Casting): Two futuristic twin-canopy concept models—one finished in a bright yellow-gold lime Spectraflame and one in an emerald green Spectraflame. Both feature dual plastic cockpit canopies and moving rear wing spoiler elements.
Turbofire (1969 Casting): One model finished in a deep fiery copper-orange Spectraflame, featuring a functional front-hinged opening hood panel that flips forward to reveal a highly polished chrome engine bay. The base bears the 1968 Mattel Inc. USA copyright.
Ford Mk IV (1968 Casting): One sleek custom sports racer finished in a metallic copper-bronze Spectraflame. The unpainted metal base includes legible model name and 1968 Mattel Inc. USA copyright stampings alongside working rear suspension wire clips.
Mantis (1969 Casting): One model finished in a brilliant glitter-flecked Spectraflame Aqua/Teal featuring an opening rear engine cover panel and a clean 1969 Hong Kong base.
Shelby Turbine (1969 Grand Prix Series): One classic open-wheel Indy-style formula racer finished in a dark red-pink Spectraflame.
Condition Report:
The collection is in honest, unrestored vintage condition, exhibiting heavy play and age wear typical of early Redline eras. The paint finishes show widespread pinpoint chipping, surface edge scuffs, and oxidized toning blemishes. As pictured, the plastic canopy window glass is damaged or heavily compromised across most of the models; the magenta Silhouette is missing its bubble canopy entirely, the Turbofire glass is crushed and severely cracked, and other windshields show heavy scuffing and localized fracturing.
Additionally, the rolling stock features various bent axles and severely damaged wheels as pictured. The red Silhouette suffers from a heavily warped front axle with a missing driver-side tire, the Ford Mk IV is missing its rear driver-side wheel/axle assembly entirely, and several other vehicles show pronounced wheel misalignment or bowing.
