A striking mid-20th century traditional Omani-style samt/sumt coin necklace and coordinating earring set, featuring an impressive large circular central medallion with finely incised geometric and radiating decoration. The necklace is constructed on a braided fiber cord with numerous decorative barrel-form metal beads and suspended coin and token pendants.
Several coin pendants appear to be Maria Theresa thalers or related European silver coins, including examples bearing the traditional 1780 date associated with the Maria Theresa thaler. Additional coins and tokens of varying origin are incorporated throughout the necklace, including a vintage Carrier Air Conditioners advertising token. Traditional Omani samt necklaces are known for combining large decorated silver discs with coin pendants and barrel-form beads.
Accompanied by a pair of large hoop-form earrings featuring coiled wire decoration, chain suspensions, and paired engraved paddle-form dangles. One chain includes a small turquoise-colored accent.
The necklace displays substantial age-related patina, oxidation, surface wear and tarnish throughout. The braided cord shows visible wear and fraying, particularly near the tied closure. Coins and components exhibit varying degrees of wear consistent with age and use.
Condition/Testing: Displays substantial age-related patina, oxidation, tarnish and surface wear consistent with age and use. The braided cord shows visible wear and fraying near the closure. Acid testing produced a positive reaction for silver on tested areas/components; however, silver purity and metal composition throughout the necklace, coins, beads, medallion, and earrings have not been independently determined or guaranteed.
